What is a Personal Article Floater Policy in Florida?

What is a Personal Article Floater Policy?

A personal article floater policy is independent coverage, where an endorsement is added to a homeowners policy and covers valuable property. Typically, the item(s) require more coverage than the current homeowners policy limit. The majority of homeowners policies insure everyday belongings, including appliances and furniture in the event of a natural disaster or robbery. Items like jewelry, antiques and computers may be covered, however the pay out may not cover the replacement costs. This is why a personal article floater policy is put in place, so the insured is able to replace the item when an unfortunate event occurs.

What items are covered under a Personal Article Floater policy?

A personal article floater policy covers items that the homeowners policy does not. In a homeowners policy, these items are granted limited coverage, so having a personal article floater policy lets the insured get the replacement cost covered. This policy will cover the replacement cost of items that are stolen, lost or mysteriously disappear. In order to get the replacement cost, most companies require having the item appraised to confirm the value. There are several classes of personal property that are insured with this type of policy including the following:

  • Jewelry

  • Furs

  • Wine Collections

  • Cameras

  • Musical Instruments

  • Silverware

  • Personal Computers

  • China and Crystal pieces

  • Electronic Equipment

  • Fine Art items (Books, Rugs, or Antiques)

  • Stamps

  • Unique Coins

If an insured owns a large amount of jewelry or collectables, it’s recommended to evaluate the homeowners policy to see the coverage limit. Usually, a homeowners policy has a maximum limit of between $1,000 and $1,500 per jewelry item. Therefore, most rely on personal article floater policies if their jewelry exceeds that. In terms of luxury handbags, there's no limit per handbag, so one doesn’t necessarily need secondary insurance with a personal article floater policy.
